D1: Oceania Track Cycling Champs

20th November 2013: Australia collected three gold in a swag of medals on the opening day of the UCI 2014 Oceania Track Cycling Championships in Invercargill.

South Australia’s double Olympic gold medalist and 10-time world champion Anna Meares produced a world class performance to win the 500m time trial, while Kaarle McCulloch (NSW) partnered with Stephanie Morton (SA) to take out the women’s team sprint.

Australia’s third gold came through Rohan Wight in the under 19 individual pursuit.

Women’s Time Trial

Meares, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist and four-time world champion in the event, was impressive in clocking 33.500secs in the 500m time trial, less than half a second outside her own world record (33.010).

Meares was in a class of her own, over a second clear of New Zealand’s Katie Schofield (NZ) who took silver.

“I was really pleased with that. It’s the first time I have ridden that since the worlds in 2012. Tonight I was focusing on the processes for a strong 500, and to ride 33.500 in not perhaps ideal conditions, I am really pleased with,” Meares said.

“It’s the first step towards to Rio. It’s a long road but definitely tonight was a step forward. I am hoping that with each race I will get a little bit better.

“I have a long time to work towards those goals. I was the first person to ride 33 seconds and I want to be the first woman to ride 32.”

Women’s Team Sprint

Australia took gold with 2012 London Olympic team sprint bronze medalist Kaarle McCulloch and Stephanie Morton made to work hard, winning by one tenth of a second in 34.210secs from New Zealand’s Katie Schofield and Stephanie McKenzie (34.327). Australia’s Catherine Culvenor and Taylah Jennings (34.279) collected the bronze medal.

Men’s Team Sprint

The trio of Matt Archibald, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins clocked 43.765secs in qualifying to become the first New Zealand team to go under the 44 second barrier at home.

They had to work harder tonight in the evening final however, with the Australian trio of Olympians Dan Ellis, Shane Perkins and Matthew Glaetzer in front until Dawkins produced a powerful final lap to give the Kiwi team victory in 43.885secs, just four one-hundredths ahead of the Australians (43.926).

Bronze went to Australia’s Nathan Hart, Mitchell Bullen, Andrew Taylor (44.820).

Women’s Team Pursuit

New Zealand’s Lauren Ellis, Jaime Nielsen, Rushlee Buchanan and newcomer Georgia Williams rode an outstanding 4:29.000 to beat off the strong challenge from Australia’s Annette Edmondson, Georgia Baker, Elissa Wundersitz and Kelsey Robson (4:29.356) who finished less than half a second off the pace to take the silver medal.

Men’s Team Pursuit

The New Zealand quartet of of Dylan Kennett, Pieter Bulling, Marc Ryan and Aaron Gate dipped under the magical four minute barrier (3:59.385) to hold off the Australian combination of Miles Scotson, Josh Harrison, Tirian McManus, Scott Sunderland (4:03.769) by just one second.

Men’s Kilometre Time Trial

New Zealand’s Simon Van Velthooven produced a brilliant performance to clock 1:00.765 to claim the win and break his own national record by 0.2sec.

Commonwealth Games champion Scott Sunderland posted 1:01.270 to claim the silver medal, with Luke Davison (1:03.419) taking home the bronze.

In other events, Elissa Wundersitz won silver in the women’s 10km scratch race, while in the under 19 3000m individual pursuit, Rohan Wight (3:25.834) was victorious with Matthew Jackson (3:30.201) taking the silver medal.
